A Faithful Recreation of Victorian Whisky History
This is the second release in The Macallan’s highly collectible “Replica Series,” launched in 2002. The concept was bold: The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno, painstakingly recreated the nose, flavour, and strength of an original 1861 bottle found in the distillery’s archives.
Every visual detail has been replicated to match the 19th-century original, including the hand-blown style glass with its deliberate imperfections, the specific “John McWilliam” merchant labeling (a wine merchant from Craigellachie), and the period-correct cork stopper.
The Liquid Profile: Unlike the heavy sherry bombs of modern Macallan, the 1861 style was recreated to be zestier and more vibrant, with a touch of peat smoke that was common in Speyside whiskies of that era (before coal became the standard fuel).
-
Nose: Fresh and citric, with notes of sweet oak, resinous wood, and a distinct whiff of light peat smoke.
-
Palate: Spicy and crisp. Expect ginger, cinnamon, and stewed apples, followed by a dry, nutty finish.
-
Finish: Medium length with lingering citrus and gentle smoke.
