A Legendary ‘Heavy’ Rum from a Lost Distillery
This is a true collector’s piece. The Caroni Distillery in Trinidad closed in 2003, and since then, its remaining stock has become some of the most hunted liquid in the world. This specific bottling was released by independent bottler Bristol Classic Rum.
Distilled in 1997 on Caroni’s famous column stills, this is a classic “Heavy Type Rum” (HTR). It was matured for 21 years (partly in Trinidad, partly in the UK) before being bottled in 2019 at a cask strength of 56.4% ABV.
Caroni is often called the “Port Ellen of Rum” because of its cult status and finite supply. It is famous for its “dirty,” industrial, and petroleum-like flavor profile that rum geeks adore.
Tasting Profile:
-
Nose: Intense and pungent. Classic Caroni notes of tar, petrol, old leather, and ripe banana.
-
Palate: Powerful and dry. Smoky wood, diesel, menthol, and burnt caramel.
-
Finish: Extremely long, tannic, and warming with notes of black tea and eucalyptus.
